Following my reading of “the strait,” this play is a great short work by perlman that digs into the effects of colonization, industrialization, outsourcing on people’s lives. the story revolves around a diasporated family, beginning in india and moving to south africa and the philippines, stretching over a few generations. poignant monologues of decline, shifts in mindset over generations, militancy vs nonviolence vs complicity with colonizers. a particular strength of this play (and the dramatic dialogue form) is bringing out the diversity and tensions of opinions among colonizers/industrialists and colonized and those in between (such as the light-skinned daughter who marries an american).
